Coast Guard Search Massachusetts Coast Suspended After Norwegian Cruise Crew Member Overboard

coast guard search massachusetts coast operations were underway after a crew member on a Norwegian cruise ship went overboard off Cape Cod on Saturday evening,. The case unfolded as the vessel was traveling from Bermuda to Boston, with rescue crews joining the response early Sunday morning. The search was later suspended just after noon on Sunday, April 27, 2026, pending new information.

What happened off Cape Cod

The U. S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a report that the crew member was seen on security camera falling off the Norwegian Breakaway and into the waters about 12 miles off the Cape Cod town of Wellfleet. A man overboard announcement was made to passengers, and lifeboats were launched as the ship and rescue crews tried to locate the person. The Coast Guard said a search helicopter arrived just after 1: 15 a. m. ET to assist, and Coast Guard Station Provincetown also joined the operation.

Passengers were returning to Boston after a 7-day round-trip cruise to Bermuda. One passenger told investigators on the ship that the announcement was made ship-wide and that the response moved quickly once the alarm was issued. Another helicopter took off later Sunday morning before the coast guard search massachusetts coast operation was suspended around noon.

Ship returns to Boston as search is paused

The Norwegian Breakaway arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal on Sunday just before noon ET. Passengers received a letter saying the delayed arrival pushed embarkation later than expected Sunday afternoon, while the ship had remained engaged in search and rescue efforts overnight.

“Overnight and into the early morning hours, the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts following a man overboard situation, working closely with maritime authorities, ” the letter said. “These efforts required the vessel’s full attention before the voyage could safely resume toward Boston. Situations such as these are never easy, and the safety and well-being of those at sea remain at the heart of every decision we make. ”

Immediate reaction from the cruise line

, the cruise line said, “The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time. ” The vessel has since been released to continue the voyage, while the coast guard search massachusetts coast operation was ended pending new information.

Rebecca Durandisse of Needham, Massachusetts, saw the search crews out on the water and described the moment as deeply upsetting. “It’s very heartbreaking, ” she said. “I was in my estate room, lying in bed. I was drifting off to sleep when I noticed a light go on that woke me up, because I had my window open. And then I heard some loud noises. ”

What remains unclear

The name of the person who fell overboard has not been released. It is not yet known what caused the person to fall overboard, and officials have not announced any further developments beyond the suspension of the search.

Wellfleet sits on the outer portion of Cape Cod on the coast of Massachusetts, just under two hours south of Boston by car. For now, the coast guard search massachusetts coast case remains open only in the sense that officials say they will act if new information emerges.
