Georgia Elections: Republican Clay Fuller Wins Key House Runoff

In the latest Georgia elections count, Republican Clay Fuller defeated Democrat Shawn Harris for the House seat left vacant when former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene resigned earlier this year. NBC News projected the result on Tuesday night ET, with Fuller advancing from the all-party primary after winning support from President Donald Trump. Harris, a retired brigadier general, fell short after a race that drew attention for the size of the Democratic overperformance in the first round.
Georgia Elections deliver another Republican hold
The runoff centered on the seat opened by Greene’s resignation and quickly became a test of how far Democrats could narrow the margin in a heavily watched district. Republicans had won about 60% of the total vote in the first round in March, giving Fuller a strong position entering the runoff.
Chattooga County had reported more than 95% of its expected vote, while early results from Cobb County showed Harris winning 58%. That was a slight improvement for Democrats compared with the March 10 early vote results, but it was not enough to close the gap. The reporting also showed Georgia’s split of results by ballot type, including Election Day votes, in-person early votes, and early mail votes.
What the numbers showed on election night ET
The most striking detail in the race was the contrast between the first round and the runoff. Shawn Harris lost by 11. 8 points, yet posted the largest Democratic overperformance in a House special election since President Trump took office. He outperformed the Democratic 2024 presidential results by 25 points, a sign that Democrats made a meaningful but limited gain in the district.
Even so, the available vote totals pointed toward a Republican finish as the expected vote climbed toward completion. The expected vote is an estimate that changes as county election officials and vote reporters provide updated information, and it helped frame the race as results came in on Tuesday night ET.
Reactions and campaign significance
Fuller’s win gives Republicans another hold in a seat that had become a symbolic contest after Greene’s departure. Fuller, a prosecutor, had already been elevated by Trump’s endorsement during the all-party primary, and that backing helped him reach the runoff as the leading Republican contender.
The campaign also underscored the limits of Democratic gains in a special election environment. Harris’s result in Cobb County was stronger than the March 10 early vote by only 1 point, and the broader district-wide trend still favored Republicans once the runoff ballots were tallied.
What comes next in Georgia elections
The result closes one chapter in the Georgia elections calendar, but it also leaves behind a clearer picture of the district’s partisan baseline. Republicans will keep the seat for now, while Democrats can point to a noticeable improvement from earlier results without turning that progress into a win.
With the Georgia elections runoff now decided, attention turns to how each party reads the margins in future contests and whether the Democratic overperformance seen here can translate beyond a single special election.
