Meath Chronicle: Man caught without insurance banned from driving

Marius Macijauskas of Johnstown Road, Enfield, has been banned from driving for four years after pleading guilty to driving without insurance. The case was heard at Trim District Court, where the court also heard that he had been stated to have a significant drink problem for a while. The offence took place on 17th September last year at Johnstown, Enfield.
Court hears of insurance offence and suspended sentence
Macijauskas, 39, received a four month suspended jail sentence in the same case. He also faced a second charge for not having a driving licence, and that matter was taken into consideration by Judge Eirinn McKiernan. A third count in relation to drink driving was withdrawn by the state because of what Sergeant Peter Clarke described as a “fundamental flaw” in the charge.
The court heard that Macijauskas had previous convictions for insurance offences and had already been banned from driving in November last. The latest ruling means the driving ban now stands at four years, adding to the court’s response in a case that centred on repeated motoring offences. Meath Chronicle remains at the centre of this local court story as the facts were set out in Trim District Court.
What the court was told
Sergeant Clarke told the court that Macijauskas had a history of insurance-related convictions. Defence barrister James O’Brien said the defendant was self employed, had three children, and was seeking help for his problem. Those details formed part of the hearing as the court weighed the guilty plea and the wider circumstances around the case.
Why the ruling matters
The sentence leaves Macijauskas with a suspended jail term and a lengthy driving ban after an offence that was dealt with in Trim District Court. The case also shows how the court handled the separate licence issue and the withdrawn drink-driving count. Meath Chronicle will be closely watched for any further developments if the matter returns to court, but for now the key outcome is the four-year ban and the suspended sentence.
