Murphy said Gary Sánchez will probably get much of the designated hitter work in Yelich’s absence. Sánchez replaced Yelich in the fifth inning Sunday and later hit a game-tying, three-run homer in the seventh. He entered Tuesday tied for the team lead with four home runs.

The injury lands at a difficult moment for a club that had already dropped five straight games for its longest skid since 2003 before opening a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Yelich had also just come through a 2025 season in which he played 150 games, his second-highest total since joining Milwaukee in 2018 after years limited by back problems.
