Monzo launches in Ireland after 100,000 customers sign up

monzo officially launched in Ireland on Tuesday after 100, 000 customers signed up to a wait-list, marking the UK digital bank’s first market in Europe. The launch brings free current and savings accounts for individuals, plus a selection of free business accounts, as the company moves into the Republic with a banking licence secured last December. Monzo said the step is designed to give Irish customers a simpler way to manage money, with the rollout timed to meet strong demand already visible before launch.
Free accounts and Irish IBANs
Each account will come with an Irish international bank account number, placing monzo alongside other mobile banks operating in the State. Personal savings accounts allow customers to start saving from €1 and earn up to 1. 6 per cent annual interest, while the company is also offering free everyday banking for individuals and businesses. Monzo has said the Republic will serve as a launch pad for a wider push across the European Union.
Founded in 2015, monzo says it now has more than 15 million customers, including 800, 000 business customers in the UK. The company’s Irish launch comes after its banking licence from the Central Bank of Ireland and the European Central Bank gave it the ability to offer fully regulated personal and business products across the EU, beginning in Ireland.
monzo says demand was already clear
“Ireland deserves a better way of banking, and it’s clear customers are ready for it, ” said Michael Carney, EU chief executive at monzo. “The response to our waitlist shows just how strong that demand is. ” He added that Ireland is the firm’s first market in Europe and said monzo is bringing “free everyday banking and a simpler, smarter way for people and businesses to manage their finances. ”
Elaine Deehan, country manager for Ireland at monzo, said the company’s research shows Irish customers want “free everyday banking, money that works harder for them, a partner they can trust, and a bank that speaks their language. ” She said monzo combines “the best of banking and technology” with features now available to Irish customers.
How monzo fits into the market
The launch places monzo into a fast-moving Irish digital banking market already shaped by other mobile-first providers. Its entry arrives with a wait-list of 100, 000 customers and a product set built around free accounts and instant access savings, while the bank also says it will support businesses with free options.
The timing matters because monzo is using Ireland as its first European base while extending its regulated banking model beyond the UK. With the Irish launch now under way, the next stage will be whether monzo can convert that wait-list demand into active customers and build on its early momentum in Ireland.
