What prosecutors say happened

Prosecutors say cole allen, a 31-year-old California man, was carrying a semi-automatic handgun, a pump-action shotgun and three knives when he charged past a security checkpoint at the gala event. He was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump, along with two firearms offences, and he did not enter a plea when he appeared in court. The alleged attack took place at the hotel ballroom on Saturday night, one floor below the checkpoint he is said to have crossed.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said one Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but was wearing a ballistic vest that worked. It remains unclear whether the officer was shot by Allen or caught in crossfire from other law enforcement.
