Fergus Farrell plans New York to LA walk for charity after spinal injury

Fergus Farrell is preparing for a New York to LA walk this August after a spinal cord injury in 2018 left him initially given only a five per cent chance of walking again. The former rugby player from Galway aims to raise €1 million for Spinal Injuries Ireland over 75 days. The challenge will see Fergus Farrell cover 4, 500 kilometres across the United States while walking a marathon and a half each day.

A 75-day effort with a high public purpose

The journey is set to begin in New York and finish in Los Angeles, with the route designed as a coast-to-coast test of endurance and recovery. Over 75 consecutive days, Fergus Farrell expects to average about 63 kilometres a day as part of the New York to LA walk. Organisers say the effort would make him the first person with a spinal cord injury ever to complete such a walk across America and the first Irishman to do so in more than a century.

Farrell’s injury happened in 2018 during an accident while lifting a heavy metal bench, leaving him paralysed. Doctors first gave him a poor prognosis and only a faint possibility of some movement, but he later made it back on his feet. The New York to LA walk is now being framed as both a personal challenge and a public appeal for support.

Fergus Farrell says the walk is about possibility

Farrell said the effort is meant to show what can happen when people push beyond limits and receive support. “This walk is about proving what’s possible, not just for me, but for everyone living with a spinal cord injury. It’s about raising vital funds for Spinal Injuries Ireland and showing that a spinal injury doesn’t define a life; it can open new paths of possibility, ” Fergus Farrell said. He added that he hopes the journey will encourage people to look beyond perceived limitations.

Fiona Bolger, chief executive of Spinal Injuries Ireland, said Fergus Farrell’s challenge is more than a physical feat and called it a story of hope and resilience. She said the funds raised through Fergus Walks are crucial for the organisation to keep delivering support services, education, advocacy, peer support, counselling, and help with daily life after injury.

Why the New York to LA walk matters now

Spinal Injuries Ireland says it is the only national organisation providing support, information, and advocacy services to people with spinal cord injuries and their families. That makes the fundraising target central to the campaign’s purpose, not just its headline number. The New York to LA walk is also intended to shine a light on the realities of living with a spinal cord injury while showing the potential for recovery and adaptation.

Fergus Farrell’s sporting background includes representing Connacht at under-18, U19, and U20 level, as well as playing for the Irish Youths at U18 level. He also played for the Connacht Juniors and is known in Galway rugby circles for his time with Monivea RFC and Galwegians RFC. As August approaches, the New York to LA walk will test Farrell’s preparation, but it is already carrying a wider message about resilience, support, and what comes next for people living with spinal cord injury.
