Andrew Welsh at centre of chaotic Gold Coast citizen’s arrest before Suns clash

andrew welsh was at the centre of a chaotic citizen’s arrest on the Gold Coast on Friday night, just hours before Essendon’s clash with the Gold Coast Suns. The incident unfolded in Broadbeach around 7: 30pm ET after a white Ford Ranger ute drove through a nearby bus stop and hit a light pole. Welsh was dining with Essendon CEO Tim Roberts and club sponsors when he saw the driver trying to flee the scene.
Broadbeach scene turns suddenly chaotic
Welsh then grabbed the driver and tackled him to the ground, with help from another bystander in Broadbeach. The pair stopped the male from running and held him on the ground in front of stunned onlookers before police arrived within minutes. A witness described the moment as “an extremely chaotic scene” and said it was remarkable that no one appeared to be in the ute’s path.
The driver was later handcuffed, placed in the back of a police van and treated by paramedics. The crash and the arrest happened on Surf Parade near Charles Avenue, where the damage to the bus stop and the pole quickly drew attention from people nearby.
Andrew Welsh drew immediate attention before the match
For Essendon, the episode landed hours before the club’s Round 6 game against the Gold Coast Suns. The focus around Andrew Welsh shifted from club business to the incident on the street, with the president moving directly into the scene after seeing the ute crash and the driver attempt to leave.
Welsh’s involvement was described as a citizen’s arrest, and the account from onlookers made clear how fast the situation escalated. The witness account pointed to a busy public setting, stunned crowds and a rapid response once police reached the area.
Context around the club and the aftermath
Andrew Welsh is a former Essendon player who appeared in 162 games for the club between 2002 and 2011. He joined the Essendon board in 2022 and was appointed president in September last year.
On the field, Essendon later fell short against Gold Coast by nine points in a 119-110 shootout. The club now turns its attention to the next match, while Andrew Welsh remains the name attached to one of the most dramatic moments off the field on the Gold Coast.
