Johnny Walker eyes heavyweight switch after Ngannou sparring ahead of UFC 327

johnny walker is considering a move to heavyweight after sparring sessions with former champion Francis Ngannou gave him confidence about competing at the larger weight. The UFC light heavyweight contender is still scheduled to face Dominick Reyes on the main card of UFC 327 at Kaseya Center in Miami. The fight is set for Saturday, with walkout time expected at approximately 9: 40 p. m. ET.

Walker says the diet is the issue

Walker said the push toward heavyweight has less to do with frustration inside the cage and more to do with the strain of staying lean at light heavyweight. He said he wants to train without the limits of a strict diet, and added that if an opportunity opens up at heavyweight, he would be ready to take it.

In his own words, Walker framed the idea around freedom in camp and timing. “I’m thinking about it because the diet has been rough. If there’s an opportunity, if a heavyweight fight gets cancelled or anything, I’m in, ” Walker said.

He also pointed to the work he has already done while carrying a much smaller frame than Ngannou. “Even while dieting, with about a 44-pound difference since I’m much lighter now, I’ve been able to train with him just fine. Even in wrestling, strength, and ground-and-pound. If I can do that while dieting, imagine without it?” Walker said.

UFC 327 still comes first

For now, johnny walker remains booked against Dominick Reyes, and that matchup stays the immediate priority. Walker is coming off a return to the win column in August, when he stopped Zhang Mingyang and earned a Performance of the Night bonus, ending a three-appearance winless stretch that included a no contest, a loss to Magomed Ankalaev, and another setback against Volkan Oezdemir.

Reyes enters from the other side of the card with his own urgency. He had a three-fight winning streak snapped in September after falling short against Carlos Ulberg, and he is now looking to reset against Walker in Miami. The style matchup has drawn attention because both men have a reputation for producing sudden endings.

The betting line slightly favors Reyes, who is listed at -142, while Walker sits at +116. That split reflects how close the fight is expected to be, even as johnny walker’s heavyweight talk adds another layer to a matchup already carrying real stakes.

What the heavyweight idea could mean

The heavyweight discussion is still conditional, not final. Walker has not said he is leaving light heavyweight now, only that the possibility is there if the timing and an opening line up after UFC 327. The sparring with Ngannou has clearly given him confidence, but his immediate task remains Reyes.

That is what makes the coming week important. A strong showing in Miami could give johnny walker momentum in either direction: another run at light heavyweight, or a more serious push toward heavyweight if the right chance appears after UFC 327.
