Serie A: Spalletti blasts Juve after Genoa win as Champions race tightens

In Serie A, Luciano Spalletti praised Juventus for the way it opened its 2-0 win over Genoa, but he said the second half exposed a worrying drop in control. The result, delivered in Turin and discussed after the final whistle in Eastern Time terms, left Juve within striking distance of the Champions zone. The coach’s message was blunt: the first half was strong, but the response after halftime was not good enough.

Spalletti’s warning after the final whistle

Spalletti said Juventus looked like two different teams in the same match, pointing to a dominant opening period followed by a second half he described as below the standard he expects. He stressed that the issue was not fatigue, saying the squad had not trained on the previous two days and that the problem was the team accepting a lesser version of itself. In Serie A, he said, that kind of drop can turn a controlled match into a dangerous one.

The coach also said he still does not fully know what he is dealing with inside the team after several months in charge, adding that he cannot accept the lack of continuity. His concern was sharpened by the way Genoa stayed alive in the contest and by the possibility that a single episode could have changed everything if the visitors had converted a late penalty.

Di Gregorio and Cambiaso shape the reaction

Andrea Cambiaso called the victory fundamental for the Champions chase and said it sent a positive signal after the other results in the race. He praised Michele Di Gregorio, who stepped in and saved a penalty from Martin, calling the goalkeeper decisive and saying he was happy for him. Cambiaso added that the team knew it had to win and that the point swing was too important to miss in Serie A.

Spalletti also singled out Di Gregorio in his own remarks, saying the goalkeeper had earned the praise after being out of the side for 43 days. He said the response had to come from the player himself and described the performance as something strong and deserved.

Injury concerns add pressure to the night

The win was not clean from a squad-management point of view. Spalletti said there was concern over the calf discomfort felt by Vlahovic and Perin, and that medical checks would be needed to determine how long they might be out. That uncertainty added a sharper edge to an evening that already carried weight because of the standings and the pressure around every point.

The coach’s frustration did not erase the value of the result, but it did underline how fragile the balance remains. In a tight race, even a comfortable scoreline can leave unanswered questions if the performance changes too sharply after the break.

Serie A race stays open

The victory lifted Juventus closer to the Champions places and kept the chase alive, with Cambiaso stressing that several teams remain packed tightly together. Spalletti’s criticism, however, showed that the club is still searching for a more reliable identity inside Serie A, even on nights when the result goes its way.

The next test will matter just as much as this one. If Juventus wants to keep climbing in Serie A, it will need more than a strong first half: it will need the same control, the same order, and the same urgency from start to finish.
