Murcia: Sierra Espuña Fire Escalates as Plan Infomur Level 2 Is Activated

The wildfire that ignited around 1: 00 p. m. ET on Sunday in the Sierra Espuña natural park has become a major emergency for the region of murcia, with emergency services, regional aerial units and the Unidad Militar de Emergencias mobilized as strong north winds hamper containment.

What Is the Current Scale of the Fire?

The Delegation of Government in the Region of Murcia states that approximately 400 hectares of the park have burned. The blaze began in the early afternoon and emergency and protection services have been working on suppression since its detection. Helicopters are conducting repeated water drops and making sweeps over the active fronts, while regional ground crews remain engaged around the perimeter.

Evacuations have been carried out for nearby people and assets: a scout group on the Finca Caruana was moved out as a precaution, with 80 children and 14 monitors evacuated, and a cattle farm was also cleared. Regional emergency services from Lorca report their contribution on the ground includes eight vehicles and 14 personnel supporting the operation.

How Is Murcia Coordinating the Response?

The regional President, Fernando López Miras, is at the Advanced Command Post in Llano de las Cabras overseeing operations. The regional government has activated Plan Infomur at operational level 2 for serious fires and has authorized the intervention of the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME). Elements of the UME have been mobilized: the Third Battalion departed from Base “Jaime I” in Bétera to join suppression efforts and UME commanders have been contacted to coordinate deployment.

Additional assets are being shored up. The regional president has requested two hydroplanes from the national environment ministry (Miteco), with their deployment conditioned by prevailing wind conditions. A helicopter from the neighboring autonomous community is on scene and another from ACOVI is also operating. The regional emergency communications service in the neighboring community has dispatched two aerial units to support the response.

The Delegate of the Government, Francisco Lucas, has communicated the UME deployment and urged the president to convene a unified Coordination Center so administrations act cohesively. Local firefighting forces, CEIS units and the Guardia Civil are participating in the combined response and have been publicly acknowledged for their work.

What Comes Next?

Strong north winds are the primary operational constraint and remain a decisive factor in how the incident will evolve. Commanders have prepared to escalate UME involvement and to deploy requested hydroplanes if conditions allow. Regional and national aerial and ground assets are being concentrated on suppression and protection tasks while evacuation and asset protection measures continue where needed.

Uncertainties center on weather-driven behavior: wind strength and direction will determine whether containment lines hold, whether additional evacuations are necessary and how quickly crews can secure the perimeter. Emergency teams are prioritizing human safety, protection of nearby assets and the stabilization of active fire fronts.

For residents and those in surrounding zones, maintain clear lines of communication with local emergency channels and follow instructions from on-scene authorities. The immediate operational picture will depend on wind conditions and the pace of coordinated UME and regional action in murcia
