Social Welfare Payments shift as Easter bank holiday approaches

Some social welfare payments will be made early next week as banks and post offices close for the Easter bank holiday. Recipients are being advised of adjusted payment dates to avoid delays over the long weekend.
What Happens to Social Welfare Payments around the Easter bank holiday?
Payments that would normally land on the Easter bank holiday will be processed earlier. With Easter Monday falling on April 6, payments scheduled for that day will instead be made available on either Friday, April 3, or Saturday, April 4. Similarly, monthly Child Benefit that was expected on Tuesday, April 7 will be paid early on either Friday, April 3, or Saturday, April 4.
The advance scheduling is intended to ensure nobody experiences a late payment when banks and post offices are closed over the holiday. The social welfare payment schedule is set to return to its normal timetable the following week.
What other payment date changes and allowances are affected?
Beyond the Easter adjustments, the Fuel Allowance season for the current social welfare year has been extended. The 2025/2026 Fuel Allowance season began on Monday, September 22, 2025 and was originally due to run for 28 weeks until April 3, 2026; the government confirmed the end date has been extended by four weeks so the season will now end on May 1. The extension responds to recent increases in fuel costs.
Child Benefit remains a monthly payment of €140 to parents or guardians of children under 16. It is also payable for children aged 16, 17 and 18 if they are in full-time education or full-time training, or if they have a disability and cannot support themselves.
The annual Carer’s Support Grant (formerly the Respite Care Grant) will be paid on June 4, 2026. The grant is automatically paid to recipients of the Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit and Domiciliary Care Allowance. If someone is not receiving one of those payments they may still qualify and can submit an application. Applications for the Carer’s Support Grant can be made any time from April 2026 up until December 31, 2027.
What should recipients expect and do next?
Recipients should expect key payments to arrive on Friday, April 3 or Saturday, April 4 rather than on the bank holiday dates of April 6 and April 7. Child Benefit recipients scheduled for early April will see their monthly payment processed on one of those earlier days to prevent disruption. The wider schedule will revert to normal the week after the holiday.
Separately, households receiving Fuel Allowance should note the season has been extended to May 1, and carers eligible for the Carer’s Support Grant will receive that annual payment on June 4, 2026; applications remain open from April 2026 through December 31, 2027 for those who need to apply. In the week ahead, recipients should monitor their accounts for the adjusted dates and be aware that social welfare payments will be advanced to avoid bank holiday delays.
