Cork University Hospital locks down as norovirus surge forces strict visitor controls

Cork University Hospital is in lockdown as it battles an “unprecedented surge” of norovirus, tightening visitor rules, securing entrances and asking the public to stay away except on approved compassionate grounds.

What Is the Current Situation?

The HSE South West branch said the facility has implemented the highest level of visitor restrictions after outbreaks affected multiple wards and several strains of the virus circulated within the hospital. Symptoms identified include the sudden onset of severe vomiting and diarrhoea, and anyone with those symptoms is asked not to attend the hospital unless they require urgent medical care.

CUH chief executive Jennifer Kearney stated that unapproved visiting is no longer permitted. The hospital has secured all entrances and is being carefully managed while staff work to protect vulnerable patients and bring the outbreak under control.

Consultant microbiologist at CUH, Aaron Doherty, highlighted that norovirus spreads very easily in healthcare settings and that even brief visits can result in infection and further spread to patients, staff and families.

What Restrictions Is Cork University Hospital Enforcing?

  • Highest level of visitor restrictions implemented across the campus.
  • All entrances to the hospital secured to control movement on site.
  • Unapproved visiting is not permitted; visits must be prior approved on compassionate grounds with the clinical team.
  • Members of the public with vomiting or diarrhoea advised not to attend unless they need urgent medical care.
  • Multiple wards affected and several strains of norovirus are circulating, prompting strict infection control measures.

What Should the Public Expect Next?

Members of the public are asked not to visit friends or relatives on the hospital campus unless prior approval has been granted on compassionate grounds by the clinical team. The hospital thanks the public for co‑operation as staff manage the situation and aim to bring the outbreak under control.

Given the measures in place and the contagious nature of the illness as described by CUH clinical staff, the site will remain under heightened controls while teams focus on protecting vulnerable patients and curbing further spread at Cork University Hospital
