Midlands 103: Wtech Fire Group’s sale signals a bigger turning point for a Mullingar success story

midlands 103 frames the story in human terms: a Mullingar company that began with one cornerstone business is now moving onto a larger global platform. Wtech Fire Group, the specialist fire protection, detection and maintenance group, has agreed to be acquired by NYSE-listed APi Group in a deal expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals.
The transaction is more than a corporate handover. For the people behind Wtech, it marks the latest stage in a growth path built over four decades, 12 strategic acquisitions, and a wider push beyond Ireland into several European markets. The scale is significant, but so is the continuity: Ted Wright, CEO of Wtech Group, is set to remain in place after closing.
What does the Wtech Fire Group acquisition mean for Mullingar?
At ground level, the deal shines a light on a company rooted in Mullingar and built around Writech, the cornerstone business founded in 1985. Over the past 40 years, the group has expanded into a larger fire safety platform with more than 800 employees and an expected $175m in annual revenue across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway and Germany.
That matters because the acquisition is not happening at the edge of the business. It is happening after years of growth under Waterland Ireland, which first partnered with Wtech in 2021. Since then, the group has completed 12 strategic acquisitions and developed an international platform through a mix of organic growth and buy-and-build expansion. For the workforce, that history helps explain why the sale is being presented as a continuation rather than a reset.
Ted Wright called the move a “transformational moment” for Wtech Fire Group and said there was strong alignment with APi in values, culture and investment in people. He also said customers trust the company to deliver high-quality fire and life safety solutions, and that APi’s global platform gives the scale to do more.
Why is APi Group interested in Wtech Fire Group?
APi Group sees a specific strategic fit. The acquisition meaningfully strengthens its fire sprinkler and suppression services and gives it more reach in building an end-to-end fire and life safety offering across Europe. Russ Becker, president and CEO of APi, said the company had built strength in fire alarm and detection, as well as electronic security, but needed greater scale in sprinkler and suppression to serve customers fully.
Becker described Wtech as filling that gap and said its expertise makes it a natural fit. He also said APi is pleased to have Ted Wright continue to lead the business after closing and believes there is room for Wtech to grow both organically and through strategic acquisitions under APi ownership.
For Wtech, the value of that fit is practical. Its client base already spans commercial, industrial, power substations, data centres and renewable energy. Its new owner brings a broader international structure, while Wtech brings established specialist capability and a track record of expansion.
How does this deal affect employees, customers and growth?
For employees, the clearest signal is continuity wrapped in scale. Wtech says APi’s global platform should create room to do more, while the leadership change is minimal because Wright is expected to remain at the helm after closing. That can matter in a business built on technical trust, long-term client relationships and specialist service delivery.
For customers, the promise is broader capability. The acquisition is intended to create a more comprehensive fire and life safety solution across Europe, linking Wtech’s fire sprinkler and suppression expertise with APi’s wider international fire protection, detection and electronic security business.
Waterland Ireland’s exit also marks a milestone in the private equity group’s partnership with Wtech. Laura Dillon, partner at Waterland Ireland, said the sale reflects what can be achieved through a clear strategy and collaboration with an ambitious leadership team. She said the business delivered excellent growth since the 2021 partnership, combining organic expansion with a successful acquisition programme. Wright, in turn, thanked Waterland for its guidance, support and belief in the business.
What happens next for Wtech Fire Group?
The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026, but only after customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals are met. That means the next phase is still procedural, even if the strategic direction is already clear. Wtech Fire Group is moving from a privately backed growth story to life inside a larger listed industrial platform.
For now, the image is of a Mullingar business that has grown steadily from its foundation into an international specialist, and is now preparing for its next chapter under APi Group. The question is not whether the company has momentum; it clearly does. The question is how far that momentum can travel once midlands 103’s local story is carried into a wider European network, with the same team still expected to lead the way.
