Playstation Network hit by outage as Sony begins branding phase-out

An internal SIE email said: “We’d like to inform you that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has strategically decided to phase out the terms ‘PlayStation Network’ and ‘PSN’ across our platform in order to properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services. ” The message described the change as purely visual and said that core network features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies will remain unaffected.

Evidence of the change has appeared in a recent PS5 system update where “PlayStation Network” labels in the console user interface were replaced with shorter “PlayStation” text and phrases like “PlayStation Network sign-in” were altered to “Sign in to online services. ” The service-status page title has also been shortened in line with the rebranding work.

Users posted direct pleas and brief error messages from affected consoles, including calls for a fix and declarations that “PSN is down. ” On the developer side, the SIE communication set a timeline to phase out references to PlayStation Network across assets by September 2026 and linked the rollout to an update of the Technical Requirements Checklist in the fall of 2026. The email noted that the changes will be visual only and instructed developers to align with updated branding guidelines when the TRC is updated.
