Aib Banking overhaul: €6 monthly fee replaces quarterly charges and aims to cut customer costs

aib banking is moving from a quarterly fee-plus-transaction model to a single €6 monthly charge for most current account holders, the bank said, a change taking effect from 1 July (ET) aimed at simplifying fees and reducing average customer costs. AIB will cover card transactions, transfers, card taps and ATM withdrawals under the new all-in charge. The bank cited customer research and feedback as the reason for the switch.

What changes and who is affected

The new structure replaces the existing quarterly maintenance fee of €4. 50 plus per-transaction charges with a €6 fixed monthly fee for the majority of current account customers. The change means many customers will move from variable quarterly bills to a predictable monthly payment; AIB says customers will pay around 12% less in fees on average and that the majority of fee-paying customers will pay less than under the old system. The new charge covers routine services including card transactions, transfers, card taps and euro payment transactions, while a range of service charges will be removed when the structure is applied from 1 July (ET).

Under the new regime, customer accounts that are already exempt from maintenance and transaction fees remain exempt from the €6 monthly charge. Exempt account types listed by the bank include accounts for those aged 66 and over, Student and Student Plus accounts, Graduate, Standard Care and Basic accounts, and accounts where an AIB mortgage on a home in the Republic of Ireland is paid through the personal AIB current account. Accounts that are inactive for the whole month will not be charged the monthly fee.

Aib Banking reaction and official statement

AIB said: “These changes are in keeping with AIB’s commitment to put our customers first, and are being introduced on foot of customer research and feedback, and will result in a reduction of around 12pc in customer fees on average. The majority of customers who pay fees will pay less than they pay now. ” The bank also confirmed continued access to its mobile app, instant payments, branch network services and 24/7 fraud support under the new structure. The institution noted it has 3. 4 million customers.

Quick context

Under the previous charging model customers faced a quarterly maintenance fee plus transaction fees such as automated transactions charged at 20c. The new approach aligns the bank’s day-to-day charging model to a single monthly maintenance fee, with the first charge timing noted to fall within July (ET).

What’s next

The charge structure comes into place from 1 July (ET) with the initial monthly deduction scheduled in July (ET); customers will see the new routine applied and some removed service charges rolled back when the change is implemented. Observers and experts have warned that low users of current accounts could lose out under a flat monthly fee, so customer groups, account holders and those managing infrequent transactions will be watching how exemptions and inactivity rules are applied. For customers monitoring their balances and fee exposure, the move to a single charge will make comparisons with competitors and previous bills clearer as aib banking lands in accounts this July (ET).
